The standard time for the sample survey was 0:00 on April 1, 1987. The survey was conducted simultaneously in 29 provinces. Using probability proportional sampling method, 424 counties were selected from 29 provinces. A total of 369,816 households and 1,579,314 individuals were surveyed, accounting for 1.50‰ of the country's total population.
